The first Walmart Neighborhood Market in the City of Los Angeles will open today in Panorama City, providing residents with a new option for jobs and affordable groceries. Located at 14530 Nordhoff Street, the store is part of the Vannord Center and occupies the former Valley Food Warehouse building.
“Our community has been in great need of a general grocery store that offers affordable fruits, vegetables and other grocery items,” said Dianabel Gonzalez, chair of the Panorama City Neighborhood Council. “Many of our residents had very limited choices for groceries but now will have a wonderful shopping experience at the new market. I’m excited, my mother is excited, and the community is grateful.”
The 32,000-square-foot Panorama City store employs approximately 65 people and will be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week. It features a self-serve deli, a self-serve bakery, including a cake case, a wide variety of locally grown fruits and vegetables, as well as meats, cheeses and prepared foods. In addition to the fresh, locally grown produce and bakery items, the store will carry a full line of groceries, including frozen foods, meat and dairy products, gluten-free and organic items.
Vannord manager Suzanne Ponder told the Business Journal, “the 90,000-square-foot center had been fully leased, but that changed when its anchor left. Vandals went after the building’s copper and there are currently about 15 vacant storefronts, totaling about 31,000 square feet; and that’s not counting the shell of a building Walmart will occupy.”
“This is amazing good fortune for the center,” she said.
The store will be the retailer’s seventh location in the city of Los Angeles. Walmart currently operates stores in West Hills, Porter Ranch, Baldwin Hills Mall, Torrance and Panorama City and recently announced plans to open a Walmart Neighborhood Market downtown at 701 W. Cesar E. Chavez Ave. That store is expected to open in 2013.
